Vettori accepts Test career may be over

Daniel Vettori, New Zealand’s most capped Test player, has accepted that his playing days in the longest format are virtually over. Due to a series of injuries, he hasn’t played a Test in more than two years, and he has now set his sights on the World Cup at home. “[Test cricket’s] not at the forefront of my mind,” he told the Herald on Sunday.

“I can’t guarantee the amount of overs [required] to play a Test match and don’t want to get in way of Ish [Sodhi] and Mark [Craig] in their development. It’s definitely on the back burner.” Almost all the cricket that the 35-year-old Vettori has played in 2014 has been with Twenty20 franchises, with Jamaica Tallawahs in the Caribbean Premier League and with Brisbane Heat in Australia’s Big Bash. He also coached Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL this year. He hasn’t played one-day cricket since June 2013, but has turned out for Northern Districts in four first-class matches last season.

After the second six I said I am waiting for the bat, but I miscued a short ball. I think I need more patience, I am getting good starts in the first six overs. Virat Kohli Next Superstar of World Cricket

Virat  Kohli still form the fulcrum of Indian batting despite test failures

Poster boy, Rockstar or Mr. Stylish whatever you would like to call him, Virat Kohli will continue to entertain the cricket crazy fans in India through his unending passion to deliver on the field. Despite his evident struggles against ace English speedster, James Anderson, in the recently concluded test series in the UK, he never shied away from taking the strike to him whenever he got the opportunity. This deserves a big round of applause for the Delhi boy as most batsmen in his place would not have dared to do so. Given the adversity at large, he could have easily chosen to stay from the strike when Anderson was about to bowl. But it didn’t happen much to the delight of cricketing fans who love to see players showing fight when the chips are down. Virat did just that. It is due to this never-say-die attitude, he scored runs in the ODI series and a lone T20 encounter that followed the test series.

England test tour-an aberration for Virat Kohli

The test series in England had been a complete dampener for a star batsman like Kohli who managed a meagre 134 runs in 10 innings with no fifty. This is where Virat needs to grow in stature as a batsman. He must realize such blemish happens in every cricketer’s life, but the key lies in recovering from that. And if he has to graduate himself from a good batsman to great batsman, then he must concentrate on putting up a spirited display of performance in the test series down under later this year. This will not only help him establish as an accomplished test player but also augur well for India’s campaign to defend the world cup title followed by the test and ODI series in Australia.

Why Virat is a vital cog of the Indian team?

Virat, despite the woeful test series against England, has been hogging limelight on account of superb batting displays in the shorter format of the game i.e. ODIs and T20s. He scored a hundred against at the start of this year with 123 against New Zealand at Mclean Park, Napier, followed by 78 in Seddon Park, Hamilton. Despite his heroics, NZ won the 5 match one day series 4-0 with the 3rd ODI at Eden Park, Auckland, ended in a tie. He continued his rich vein of form in the following test series against the Kiwis with a hundred in the 2nd test match at Basin Reserve, Wellington, continuing from 62 in the 2nd inning of the first test match won by NZ. However, India couldn’t seize the initiative in the 2nd match as they let the home side go off the hook when they were starring down the barrel at 102 for 5 facing a deficit of 246. Brendon McCullum couldn’t have chosen a moment than that to score a triple hundred. His core of 302 not only took the game from India but also stared the visiting side at defeat. However, bad light came in to India’s rescue with the match being called off. Kiwis won the series 1-0, but Virat established himself as a perfect no 4 batsman for India, a place which the maestro Sachin Tendulkar held it for many a years.

Following the successful trip to NZ, Virat continued his good form in the Asia Cup with a superb century against Bangladesh in India’s opening game and a well made 48 against Sri Lanka in the next game. However, he got out cheaply against arch-rivals Pakistan in the last match. As a result of consecutive defeats at the hands of SL and Pak, India was shown the exit door. Then came the all important T20 WC 14 in Bangladesh and Virat displayed superb performances against Pak, West Indies, Bangladesh and Australia in the league stage. Later on in the semi-final, he scored a brisk 72 off 44 balls to seal the fate of a formidable South African side. But despite his brilliant 75 in the final, Virat could not save India from a crushing defeat at the hands of Lankans. He was way too short of expectations in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2014 with an aggregate of 359 runs in 14 games at a modest average of 27.61. However, he still remains a centripetal force around which the entire team revolves.

Muralitharan on Ajmal

Muralitharan: Ajmal must be strong

There is one man who would exactly know how Saeed Ajmal would be feeling right now. It is unlikely that the Pakistan off-spinner would have had a single night of decent sleep ever since he was banned from international cricket for an alleged ‘illegal’ action.

The Lankan great, who finished his career with 800 Test wickets, felt that the best way to overcome this phase for Ajmal would be to ‘prove it to people that he isn’t doing anything wrong.’ “In my case, I was naturally upset when the allegations (of chucking the ball) were first made against me. After all, you’re only a human! However, I believed in myself. I wanted to prove it that I wasn’t doing anything wrong. I cleared around six-seven Tests during my almost two-decade old career. Once he proves it that his action is legal, and the ‘bend’ in his arm while delivering the ball is below 15 degrees, he can bowl again,” said Murali, who is ironically now a spin bowling coach with the Australian team for their series against Pakistan in UAE.

Match 7, Group A, September 21

Kolkata won by 4 wickets.

Uthappa and Gambhir set up the game with a brilliant opening stand worth 100.

Gambhir: “Important that the openers give a good platform, made it easy for the middle order. Middle order had won us the last game. A kind of wicket where you never know what a good total is. Robin took his time and later played good shots. I do not want to be too critical (about the fielding). We have won 11 in a row which is a great achievement.”

Kings XI  Punjab V/S Barbados Tridents

Match 5, Group B, Punjab Cricket Association Stadium, Mohali

After a decent win against the Hobart Hurricanes, George Bailey & Co would love to make it two in a row when they take on The Barbados Tridents in a crucial Group B encounter at the PCA Stadium, Mohali.

Pitch and Conditions

The PCA Stadium pitch is expected to have pace and bounce as it generally does. There could be some turn for the spinners too. All in all a good cricket wicket where the batsmen can trust the bounce and play through the line.

Barbados Tridents

The Champions of the Caribbean  Premier League boast of a fine pace attack comprising of the experienced Ravi Rampaul, Jason Holder and Ryad Emrit. The Tridents would be hoping to make best use of the conditions against the KXIP top order which did not have a good day against the Hurricanes .The batting would revolve around the South African Neil Mckenzie and Kiwi all rounder James Franklin. Elton Chigumbara and Jeevan Mendis would play the roles of the all rounders.

Kings XI Punjab

The runners up of the IPL rely heavily on their strokemakers who have lit up the IPL with some breathtaking batting. Sehwag, Vohra, Miller, Maxwell, Bailey and Perera  are all capable of winning matches on their own with the bat. To add to that KXIP are a superb fielding unit and have a decent bowling attack with Awana, Perera  and the promising Akshar Patel in good form.

To sum it up we are in for a cracking Saturday evening at Mohali.

CLT20 2014 – Team profile – Kings XI Punjab

KXIP

This Fantastic team is owned by the bollywood’s queen bee , Preity Zinta along with  Wadia Group scion, Ness Wadia, Dabur’s Mohit Burman and Karan Paul. This team sounds to be more appealing in present scenario under the past leadership experiences of great players like Yuvraj Singh, Kumar Sangakara , Mahela Jayawardena and Adam Gilchirst . Though, it struggled to win an IPL trophy but they holds the record for the longest winning streak. The starting season was a decent one for them as they qualified till the semis .The most pathetic situation was in 2010 season when they ended up last .Till 2013 they were a decent team and were not treated as “dads of the tournament”.

In 2014, the “smiley” of the Australian team , George Bailey was selected as the torch bearer of the team. His patience has always been a key for the Australian cricketer to be a successful leader. He guided his team to the finals of IPL 2014 with the lights of Maxwell, Sehwag, Miller and some other emerging Indian stars like akshar patel,Cheteshwar Pujara,Manan Vohra,Wriddhiman Saha and Rishi Dhawan. With the fierceful hitting of Maxwell and Miller, some contributions from Sehwag with the bat and some good swinging skills from Sandeep, and all rounder traits from Akshar Patel, they are proving themselves to be the Favorites .The IPL’14 has been the most successful journey of all the other journey’s in the past for this team .They were the favorites till the last match of the season but unfortunately luck dumped them in the finals against the last minute heroes, Kolkata Knight Riders.

Kings XI Punjab are playing this tournament for the first time but after a victorious performance in the last IPL season ,this team have gathered a lot a confidence to be the favorites in the ongoing Champions League T20,2014 .As the tournament is taking place in India ,the Indian franchise teams will be the favorites to win it. And among them Kings XI Punjab can be the best from the rest as they are going under a victorious journey under the guidance of Sanjay Bangar and leadership of the captain smiley, George Bailey. The main strength of this team is the way in which they bat with the strong hammering skills of Maxwell and Sehwag , the dependable batting traits of Miller and Bailey, and the all-rounder traits of Akshar Patel and Rishi Dhawan. Their main competitors in this race will be the mighty Chennai Super Kings, the consistent Kolkata Knight Riders and the skillful Northen Knights who are showing great talents in exploiting the Indian Conditions.
