India’s Sunil Joshi Appointed As Bangladesh Spin Bowling Coach

Sunil Joshi - appointed Bowling Coach of Bangladesh Cricket Team
Sunil Joshi – appointed Spin Bowling Coach of Bangladesh Cricket Team

Bangladesh appointed former Indian spinner Sunil Joshi as their spin bowling consultant ahead of the upcoming series against Australia. Bangladesh cricket board made this decision right before the series when their first choice for spin bowling consultant position Australia’s Stuart McGill declined the offer recently.

47 year old Sunil Joshi has served India as slow left arm spin bowler during 1996 – 2000 in 15 test matches. A bowler in a classical mould whose basic strength was his flight which he used to deceive the batsman.  Not very successful at international level but Sunil Joshi had his moments during his stay as an international cricketer. In Bangladesh’s inaugural test match Sunil Joshi was the man who took 8 wickets & scored 92 runs to get man of the match and once in a one day international against South Africa he had an exceptional time by bowling 6 maidens out of the allotted 10 overs and notched up 5 South African batsman at the expense of just 6 runs to get the man of the match award.

A great success at domestic level with more than 600 wickets to his credits in 160 matches in a career spanned over 19 years for various teams.  Sunil Joshi previously coached Hyderabad & Jammu Kashmir in Indian domestic circuit whereas at international level he had been appointed as a spin bowling consultant of Oman’s national team.

As Bangladesh will be planning to set up a spin trap for Australians than Bangladeshi’s left arm spinner can learn a lot form Sunil Joshi. Experienced Shakib Al Hasan and young duo of Taijul Islam and Mehidy Hasan Mirza can get lots of advice and tips from that Indian veteran.

Sunil Joshi will join the Srilanks’s Chandika Hathurusingha (Head Coach), West Indian legend Courtney Walsh (Fast Bowling Coach) and Zimbabwean Richard Halsall (Fielding Coach) in Bangladeshi coaching panel. It is also to be known that position of batting coach is vacant as Bangladesh cricket board did not renewed the contract of Srilankan Thilan Samarawera who was serving on that position.

Australia vs Bangladesh – Series Preview 2017

If Australia had came to face Bangladesh at their home soil 2-3 years back than no one might have given an inch to Bangladesh & critics did not wasted their time in doing analysis of this current series between the two nations which is scheduled to get started from 27th Aug, 2017; but the way things have changed in recent times which had made Bangladesh a new emerging power house of sub continent specially on their home turf.

Recent Form

If you look at Australia’s track record in Asia during the same tenure when Bangladesh has rose to new heights than this is something which Australia want to change at every cost. Australia has lost 7 out of their last 9 test matches against sub continental teams in Asia. They lost to Pakistan in 2-0 in a two test match series back in 2014-15 season when they faced Pakistan in United Arab Emirates. In 2016 they got white washed by Srilanka in the island in a three test match series; followed by a 2-1 loss to India in a 4 match series on rank turners which showed the inability of Australian batting line up to cope the quality spinners.

On the other side Bangladesh have been in the form of their life with a combination of experience and youth they have changed their fortunes; from a side who was easy to beat all ends up is now transformed themselves in a bunch of guys who is giving hard time to all big teams in conditions which is favorable to them. Since India’s tour of Bangladesh in 2015 Bangladesh has not lost a home test series; during this time they played against the likes of India, England & South Africa; they just did not salvage the pride by drawing the series but also registered a win against quality side like England. In their last test series against Srilanka in the Island, Bangladesh came through with the flying colors by leveling the series up with a victory in final match of the two test match series in March, 2017.

Look at the Bangladesh team

Batting forte will be led by opener Tamim Iqbal, world #1  all rounder Shakib Al Hasan and skipper Mushfiqur Rahim as they all three are topping the Bangladesh batting charts with 3677, 3479 & 3265 test runs respectively to their names and they are the only three Bangladeshi batsman’s with a career best of over 200 runs in a test innings. For their support they have Imrul Kayes, Soumya Sarkar and Sabbir Rehman who all are becoming regular in tests for Bangladesh.

In bowling domain Shakib Al Hasan will lead the troops with his slow left arm spin and will be supported by young duo of Taijul Islam & Mehidy Hasan Mirza. Fast bowling unit will be handled by young and inexperienced Mustafizur Rehman and Taskin Ahmed who both have played 4 test matches each so far.

Bangladesh Squad:  Mushfiqur Rahim(c) Tamim Iqbal, Imrul Kayes, Soumya Sarkar, Shakib Al Hasan, Taijul Islam, Sabbir Rahman, Nasir Hossain, Mehidy Hasan, Mominul Haque, Liton Das, Shafiul Islam, Mustafizur Rahman, Taskin Ahmed

Look at the Australian Team

Australian batting will come across to one of the stiffer test of late when they have to face Bangladeshi spin bowlers on the pitches which will support spinners. World # 1 batsman and skipper Steve Smith with David Warner, Usman Khawaja and Peter Handscomb will battle it out at the batting forefront for Australia.

Pace attack loaded with extreme pace in presence of James Pattinson (who is returning from an injury lay off), Pat Cummins and Josh Hazelwood will support the weakened spin bowling which will be led by experienced off spinner Nathan Lyon and supported by left arm spin duo of Ashton Agar and Glen Maxwell depending on the combination and strategy Australia devise to tackle the Bangladesh.

Australian Squad: Steve Smith (c), David Warner, Ashton Agar, Hilton Cartwright, Pat Cummins, Peter Handscomb, Josh Hazlewood, Usman Khawaja, Nathan Lyon, Glenn Maxwell, James Pattinson, Matthew Renshaw, Matthew Wade

Test Tour Schedule

Lot at stake for Srilanka in Pallekele Test

Losing an ODI series to minnows like Zimbabwe, captain relinquishing the captaincy due to poor result, chief selector gets involved in a sex scandal, your best former wining captain put allegations on management and players, this what a team never wants when they are in a rebuilding phase. And after all this the results in India vs Srilanka test series currently taking place in Srilanka is what most people expected for. But the manner in which Srilanka got beaten in both the test matches is not acceptable for the fans.

Losing 1st test by more than 300 runs and second test by margin of an innings is not what we would except from Srilanka especially at their home soil. After the retirements of batting stalwarts Kumar Sangakara & Mahela Jayawerdene who were the mainstay of their batting during the 2000’s it seems that backup talent was not up to the same level consistently. The duo had amassed more than 53,000 international runs and had an experience of more than 1200 international games combined. It is evident that Srilanka still not able to fill the big boots made vacant by those two modern batting giants.

Champions of 1996 one day international World Cup Srilanka is currently at their all time low. Since retirement of Muttiah Muralitharan from international cricket left arm spin of Rangana Herath was saving the face of Srilankan bowling unit who lacked wicket taking options. 39 year old Herath will be sitting out for the final test starting from tomorrow due to an injury which will stole experience of 89 test matches and close to 400 test wickets from the Srilankan bowling unit.

Rangana Herath who looked out of sorts during the series so far with just 5 wickets an expense of 347 runs which gave him the bowling average of almost 70 runs per wicket which was way above his overall bowling average in test matches of 28.25 runs per wicket; but his presence in the field can give some strength to the inexperience bowling lineup of Srilanka.

Since 2000 Australia is the only team who has white washed Srilanka at their home soil and with outstanding performance of Virat Kohli & co. from India so far in the series making it more than likely that they will become the second team in 17 years to embarrass Srilanka once again.

Srilanka needs to put their A game at any cost at Pallekele as this will be the first that Indian’s will be playing on this ground. Angellow Matthews, Dinesh Chandimal & Kausal Mendis have to convert their starts in something big just like Chateshwar Pujara is doing it for India through the earlier matches in the series.

Srilanka is one of the entertaining sides of world cricket and they need to have their heads held high and have to put behind the tamed performance to match the Indian’s and save some pride for themselves and fans at home.

Comparing Virat Kohli and Sunil Gavaskar

Well, this is a post long overdue. Seeing the performance of the Indian skipper in tests, one is bound to make comparisons to all the greats of Indian cricket, be it Sachin Tendulkar or Sunil Gavaskar. Although we had published an infographic comparing the perfromances of Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli long ago, now is the time to compare Virat Kohli to one other great of Indian cricket, Sunil Gavaskar. Although it seldom makes sense to compare two players who are at least a generation part, nevertheless, we will do it. This article tries to analyze if Virat Kohli is going to break the records set by Sunil Gavaskar during the peak of his test cricket career.

Virat Kohli compared to Sunil Gavaskar - can he break his records

1. As in life, in cricket too, records are only apparently broken. But they are never actually broken. For, two situations in life or in cricket can never be the same.

2.For example, Can Virat really break the record of Gavaskar who had amassed 774 runs in a series? Let’s hope and pray that he breaks it , but actually Sunny’s record can’t be broken for their circumstances are as different as day and night.
(a) Virat will do so, at the age of 27 as an experienced player, Sunil Manohar Gavaskar had scored those 774 runs in his debut series…
(b) Virat will be doing it at No.4 while Sunny Sir did it as an opener.
(c) Sunil achieved that feat in the West Indies, albeit I am the first concede that the Windies fast bowlers in that series were no great ‘movers and shakers’, Kohli will do so in India.

2. And even if I applaud 774 runs amassed by Gavaskar, in a single series I rate some other feats as records that appear broken but can’t be broken…For me, high up in that list would be JIMMY AMARNATH’S 598 in 1983 against the West Indies…Beyond Compare…in the West Indies against Marshall, Holding, Roberts, Garner, Baap Re Baap!!!
(b) Next would again be JIMMY AMARNATH’s 584 against Pakistan in Pakistan. Remember the two very ‘gentle’ men by the name of Imran Khan and Sarfaraz Nawaz/

(c) I would rate RAHUL DRAVID’S 602 in 2003-04 against the Pommies in England when all our ‘other greats’ failed miserably in that series and Jammy got 3 hundreds!

3. Good for India that Virat Virat Kohli (the repetition is intentional) and Cheteshwar Pujara did not fare well today, We scored these many runs for 4 wickets without Kohli, Pujara and Vijay. Allowed opportunity of growth for Nair and KL Rahul to feel good.

(4) After 2001, we are Junior World Champions in hockey once again! Yes, after 2001, if my memory serves me right, Augurs well for India’s future in our National Game… So, let’s not compare….how do we know what Tiger Pataudi would have done if he had a Gavaskar in his team as an opener or a Kapil Dev as a fast bowler all rounder in his team along with the illustrious spinners! Great skippers all of them, Pataudi, Ganguly, Dhoni and now Kohli developing into one. Let’s hope for the best. Gavaskar too led us to some memorable wins, the Mini World Cup Benson and Hedges in Australia in 1985! Bedi led us to some fantastic test match victories against Australia in Australia and the 404 run chase against the West Indies in West Indies for the loss of 4 wickets only with two of the Indian batsmen being run out. Amarnath and Vishwanath after they scored 85 and 104 respectively with Amarnath taking more than a day to score 85 against the West Indian bowlers and Vishy carrying on stylishly as only he could after his brother-in-law Gavaskar had got out for a 100 plus! Kapil got us that 1983 World Cup that changed the face of Indian cricket totally!!!

Miss Test Cricket, But Made Right Decision: Mahendra Singh Dhoni

Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Test Cricket, Limited overs Cricket, Indian Cricket, BCCI, Cricket, Sports

He may have quit Test cricket 2 years back in December 2014, but is clearly missing the most testing format of the game as India get ready to play a long Test series against the West Indies starting in Antigua on Thursday.

“You never lose the cricket bug. Even if you leave the game you try to stay connected to the game. I miss Test cricket because it’s challenging but I made the right decision,” Dhoni said at event in Gurgaon on Wednesday.

India’s bowling reserves will give them a healthy edge in the Test series in the West Indies, said Dhoni.

“The good thing about our bowling is that we have a pool of talent and all are fit. The Caribbean wickets may have slowed but you still get help,” said Dhoni, who felt the spinners will get a lot of advantage.

Dhoni said the two practice matches against the West Indies Cricket Board President’s XI at St Lucia will serve the Indian team in good stead.

Dhoni has limited his international career to just ODIs and T20s. He last led India in the series in Zimbabwe in June and will not to get to play till Virat Kohli’s Test squad returns for a long series at home.

Dhoni led India to the semifinals of the ICC World T20 at home and intends to carry on playing at least till the ICC Champions Trophy in the UK next year.

Sanjay Bangar anticipates grass on Antigua track for the First Test

Board of Control for Cricket in India, West Indies Cricket Board, India's Tour of West Indies 2016, West Indies vs India, WICB, BCCI, WIvsIND, Virat Kohli, Jason Holder, Murali Vijay, Kohli, Rahane, Darren Bravo, Samuels, Ramdin, Ishant, Umesh, Ashwin, Jerome Taylor, Fidel Edwards, Kemar Roach, Phil Simmons, Anil Kumble, Sanjay Banger, Abhay Sharma

Indian batting coach Sanjay Bangar after sensing the wicket for the first Test at Antigua said that the visiting players were prepared to play on both slow and lively pitches. With just two days left for the match, the wicket at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium took center stage on Tuesday with some fresh grass patches appearing on it. “We are seeing some grass cover on the pitch now and we won’t be surprised if there is some grass left on the pitch when the match begins. But how much of it remains on surface remains to be seen. We have also prepared keeping in mind that some grassy wickets slow down as the game progresses. So, we are aware of that and have prepared accordingly,” said Bangar.

“We have had very good preparation, both in the camp in Bangalore and in the last two practice matches in St. Kitts. I don’t remember the last time we had got so much time to prepare for a Test series in the past 2-3 years. We have prepared for different conditions and situations that we can encounter in a match, and we have discussed our plans and execution. We have tried to work out all angles possible and the time we have had has been very useful in terms of preparation as well as team bonding,” Bangar added.

“If a good delivery gets you out, it does not matter whether it is from a spinner or a seamer. We need to accept that and worry about the quality of the delivery instead, whether the ball was a wicket-taking delivery or not. That is something we have discussed. I don’t find an inherent weakness against either spin or seamers for any particular batsmen. It is more to do with the kind of deliveries they get,” said the batting coach on Indian batsmen weakness against the Fast or Spin bowling.

Asked about the simulations they have put in practice for countering such threats, he replied, “During the camp and in practice matches, we said that if you bat two sessions, you can return. Or, if it was a two-day game if you are happy with the way you have coped and happy with yourself mentally, the batsmen were free to come back. And in the nets we generally work a lot on communication and emphasis on strike rotation. That is why we were batting in pairs and making sure we are changing every four or five balls, rotating the strike. So, those are the things we work on during the practice sessions.”

After a hectic workout in the past three weeks, the Indian team had an optional practice session on Tuesday, with only five players – Cheteshwar Pujara, Amit Mishra, Rohit Sharma, Stuart Binny and Lokesh Rahul – showing up. Given how the playing eleven usually shapes up, a majority of these names are not assured of a spot for the first Test. Not to mention, the presence of grass makes things slightly more interesting in terms of team selection.

“I think that (playing an extra bowler) is something the coach and the captain will address and they will have discussions with the selectors who are available here on tour. I believe they will be taking the decision and in due time it will be communicated to the team and everyone else,” Bangar concluded.
