THE IDEAL START – BATSMEN WHO SCORED TONS ON ODI DEBUT

Stylish Indian batsman Lokesh Rahul created history by becoming the first ever Indian batsman to hit a century on ODI debut. RAHUL reached this feat with a maximum over long on in the first ODI of the series against Zimbabwe. He finished up on exactly 100 from 115 balls as India beat Zimbabwe by nine wickets. With this herculean effort with the bat KL Rahul became the first Indian and 11th overall batsman to achieve this feat in the debut ODI match. CricBol take a look at the full list of batsmen who got their before KL Rahul.

(1) Dennis Amiss: The Englishman was the first International batsman to achieve this rare feat. It was the second one day International ever where England were taking on Australia at Manchester on August 24, 1972. Chasing Australia’s total of 222, the England opening batsman Dennis Amiss was in full flow as he constructed a brilliant 103 from 134 balls. Amiss hit 9 fours during his stay at the crease. England went on to win the match by six wickets.

(2) Desmond Haynes: After Amiss debut ton, one day cricket had to wait nearly six years to get their second batsman who scores a century on debut. It was none other than the legendary West Indian opening batsman Desmond Haynes, who hit 148 from 136 balls against Australia at St. John’s on February 22, 1978. With the help of Hayne’s brisk ton, West Indies posted a mammoth total of 313 on the board and won the match by 44 runs.

(3) Andy Flower: The whole of 1980’s went without any batsman hitting a ton on ODI debut, The jinx was broken in the 1990s, when Flower hit an unbeaten 115 for Zimbabwe against Sri Lanka at New Plymouth on February 23, 1992. Flower hit eight fours and a six in his 152-ball knock. Sri Lanka won the match though by 3 wickets while chasing a target of 313.

(4) Saleem Elahi: In the absence of Saeed Anwar,  the talented Pakistani batsman Saleem Elahi made an unbeaten 102 from 133 balls, with 7 fours and a six against Sri Lanka at Gujranwala on September 29, 1995. Thanks to Elahi’s brilliance, Pakistan made the mockery of Sri Lanka’s total of 233 and won the match emphatically by 9 wickets

(5) Martin Guptill: After a 14-year gap, the current Kiwi opener became the fifth batsman to hit a debut hundred in ODIs. He smashed an unbeaten 122 from 135 balls with 8 fours and 2 sixes against West Indies at Auckland on January 10, 2009. The match was not possible as the match was rained out.

(6) Colin Ingram: The left-handed Proteas batsman hit 124 from 126 balls, with 8 fours and 2 sixes against Zimbabwe at Bloemfontein on October 15, 2010. Thanks to his ton, South Africa posted a massive 351 on the board, and went on to win by 64 runs.

(7) Rob Nicol: The Kiwi batsman scored an unbeaten 108 from 131 balls against Zimbabwe at Harare on October 20, 2011. Nicol hit 11 fours during his stay at the crease. Chasing 232, New Zealand went onto win the match comfortably by 9-wickets.

(8) Phil Hughes: The late Australian is also finds himself among the rare band of batsmen who has a ton on ODI debut. Hughes made 112 from 129 balls with 14 fours against Sri Lanka at Melbourne on January 11, 2013. Australia won the match by a massive margin of 107 runs.

(9) Michael Lumb: The powerful left handed England batsman who was recently in another record-breaking stand in the ongoing Royal London ODI cup, made 106 from 117 balls with 7 fours and 2 sixes against West Indies at North Stand on February 28, 2014. Despite Lumb’s fine effort with the bat, England could not chase down 270.

(10) Mark Chapman: The Hong Kong batsman who is very little known in the Cricketing fraternity blasted 124 not out from 116 balls with 11 fours and 2 sixes against UAE at Dubai on November 16, 2015. Thanks to Chapman’s efforts, Hong Kong set the target of 299 for UAE batsmen and ended up winning the match comprehensively by 89 runs.
