Benchmark: Sachin Tendulkar vs Virat Kohli Infographic

Cricket info graphic - Benchmark - Sachin Tendulkar vs Virat Kohli

As I mentioned in my last article on Virat kohli’s performance and comparisons to the cricketing legends, it has become inevitable to compare his performances to those of Sachin Tendulkar. There are many factors that can be considered to compare their performances. Factor like the number of total runs made in equal number of matches, the strike rate with which the runs were scored, the average number of runs scored in each match, the number of ce
nturies scored, matches that they have played at home and away. I will cover most of those comparisons but in a different way. Graphical representation of their performances makes it look outstandingly easy to see how they have performed. So, here is an info-graphic presenting the performances of Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli.Benchmark - ODI batting performances of Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli - Infographic

Virat Kohli’s performance and what it means for marketers and fans

Kohli after scoring a century against Sri lankaTalking of Virats Kohli’s achievements has become the latest craze among all cricket commentators recently. He recently made a record beating all the legendary cricketers in the number of matches taken to make their first 15 one day international centuries. It is a great feat by the youngster indeed and requires some appreciation and recognition for him to have to have achieved that.

Benchmark young cricketers like Virat kohli against legends like Sachin Tendulkar

Although Virat is not a new arrival on the international one day circle, it sometimes looks awkward comparing him with the legendary batsmen like Sachin Tendulkar, Ponting, and other high scorers and record holders. Benchmarks are a great way to find out the relevance of someone in a particular scenario. Benchmark in the field of sports is done by comparing player’s performances to other players who have already left their mark on the arena. So, comparing any new player to the records made by the legends are the best way to see if they are worthy enough of the fan following they garner at the moment.

 Benchmark creates brand recall

Such comparisons are a great way to give recognition to new players. For example comparing his achievement of taking the least number of matches to complete 15 centuries to Sachin Tendulkar or any other great batsman, is in one way recognizing him in comparison to another player who has already achieved that feat and may in some circumstances be more famous and popular among advertisers and the fans.

Setting standards for other batsmen around the world

Hitting centuries itself is a great thing for batsmen and hitting them as consistently as Virat Kohli sets him apart and makes him the benchmark for all the other batsmen who either play international cricket or are aspiring to play at that level. Crossing someone else’s records is one thing and setting targets is altogether another. Virat Kohli is gradually becoming one of those who set standards for others. The pace at which he has been doing that is incredible. This is comparable to only a few, or I must say only one player to have treaded this path before.

Comparing Virat Kohli to Sachin Tendulkar

Although I would never want to compare the God to any immortal (yes, it may sound comical to some), Virat Kohli’s overall performance has left me with no choice but to do just that. The cricket crazy nation that India is, was, in the past worried about and used to rejoice over the centuries of Sachin Tendulkar even in cases where the team lost. Although people were frustrated due to yet another defeat of the team, many fans found respite in the fact that their favorite cricketer had made yet another century. What I feel sometimes is that Sachin Tendulkar is a revered cricketer in India and around the world more because of his centuries and the records he has made than anything else.

Now since Virat Kohli has reached the 15 century milestone just in over a hundred matches, it becomes quite natural to think that he would eventually climb the massive mountain of runs that Sachin Tendulkar has created and till recently was considered almost insurmountable. I would also like to stress on one more point here, I believe that unlike the other record makers in Indian cricket history, Virat Kohli has been one of the major factors for the team’s wins in all the matches where he has scored handsomely.

Impact of Virat Kohli’s performance on his brand image in India

So, the next obvious question related to performance will be, is Virat Kohli’s performance also reflected by the fan following and the brand image of the cricketer in the country? Are Indian fans ready to move to their next idol? Well, there seems to be an answer to that. Virat Kohli has been getting the maximum number of ads recently, even trumping MS Dhoni. It proves at least one point; he is popular among the advertisers.

What does future have in store

The shift in the fan following is happening gradually, but will it continue going the way it is at the moment will depend on only one thing and that is the performance of Virat in the future. As of now it looks like he has got the grip on his performance and will continue at least for the foreseeable future. The real question here is, will he replace Sachin Tendulkar as the most successful batsman India has ever produced?

India vs Zimbabwe – a contest of differences

India vs Zimbabwe series 2013
India vs Zimbabwe series 2013

As the series between India and Zimbabwe ends with favorable results for India, it must have been a good experience for the young team. Although it is a heartening to watch India win, this series was mostly one sided. Although the Indian team was comprised of mostly youngsters, they had got the momentum and confidence of a winning side. On the other side, the Zimbabwe team on their part did a great job of trying their best against a formidable side like India. I would like to salute and congratulate the team Zimbabwe for their extraordinary efforts in almost all the matches. Continue reading “India vs Zimbabwe – a contest of differences”

Virat Kohli vs Mahendra Singh Dhoni – should we compare?

Captain of Indian ODI side - Virat Kohli vs M S DhoniWe have recently seen Virat Kohli captain the India ODI (One Day International) cricket team in 3 matches during the West Indies, Sri Lanka, and India Tri Series. India lost 2 matches captained by him and won the last match against West Indies. The captaincy has been handed over to Virat only because M S Dhoni was unfit to play due to an injury he sustained during one of the matches he was captaining. One thing that has been heard, read, and seen being done by all over the media is the comparison of the captaincy of Virat Kohli and M S Dhoni. I do not think this comparison should be made at all. Afterall, Virat Kohli is only the interim captain of the side, till M S Dhoni recovers from his injury and becomes fit to play again.

Why the comparison between M S Dhoni and Virat Kohli’s captaincy

It has become sort of customary to compare the positions, performances and even lives of people who reach distinguished positions in the public eye. The so called self proclaimed experts do not even take into consideration, the different aspects of the people’s lives and positions before trying to compare them. Comparisons generally are done between entities or things that are similar in most aspects. Similarly, Virat Kohli and M S Dhoni are being compared just after Virat Kohli has been assigned the role of the captain of the Indian ODI side for the remaining parts of the West Indies Tri series and the Zimbabwe series that is about to come.  Here are a few notable publishers that talk about the topic.

M S Dhoni vs VIrat Kohli

Virat Kohli overtakes M S Dhoni

Why it is not correct to compare the captaincy of Virat Kohli with that of M S Dhoni

There are many reasons that can be stated in favor of the comparison and many more against it. I would here, list down and explain some of the reasons for which Virat Kohli should not be compared with M S Dhoni in the role of a captain.

M S Dhoni is a Wicket Keeper captain while Virat Kohli is a Batsman Captain.

I am not trying to defend any of the two here. Although M S Dhoni is a captain of the side, he also is the wicket keeper. This I believe gives MSD a unique vantage point. He gets to see the ground in somewhat a similar way as the batsman ready to take on the ball sees it. This may not sound like a much bigger advantage, it gives some degree of edge when he has to set the field and change the setting occasionally. Virat Kohli on the other hand is an experienced and accomplished batsman himself. He can judge the situation of the match and the need of the moment and set the field based on the bowlers’ requirement. Although every captain takes into consideration the bowlers’ perspective while setting the field, he also thinks about the batsman on the crease and how to stop him from scoring in his strong areas. So, this judgment I believe can be made better if the captain’s perspective of the field is somewhat similar to that of the batsman. Here a wicket keeper gets a natural advantage. I do not want to take away any of the credit for the outstanding performance of M S Dhoni as a captain wicket keeper.

Virat Kohli is a newbie at the job

Virat Kohli is just a beginner at the job of leading the Indian ODI side. The bigger problem is that he is not the only aspirant for the job of captain. There are other players senior to him in the team who are also contenders for the position. Also, M S Dhoni has been the captain of the side for close to 6 years now. So, it is totally unfair to compare Virat Kohli’s captaincy skills to that of MSD.

MSD a born leader

M S Dhoni seems to be a born leader. He knows the nuances of leading the side and taking everyone together to achieve the goals at hand. To expect the same quality of leadership from Virat Kohli is again not going to help him do the job to the best of his abilities. Every person has his or her own leadership style. Similarly success and lack thereof can be a result of the leadership style of the leader and the camaraderie he creates in the team. The success of the team is not only dependent on the captain’s ability to strategize, but also on the efforts of the whole team. It is the team’s collective performance that leads to the success or failure in a game or tournament. So, to expect Virat Kohli to become a success machine within the span of a few games is asking too much of the youngster.

The best critics can do now is to give him some time to hone his leadership skills and build a degree of trust and respect among his teammates. That will take him a long way and help Indian cricket nurture a great captain who is also a good batsman. M S Dhoni became a successful captain not only due to his skills and the luck factor, but after the faith and support of his senior players like Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid.

Cricbol wishes a Happy Birthday to M S Dhoni on turning 32

Happy Birthday -7th July - to M S Dhoni

M S Dhoni, the captain of the Indian Cricket team in turns 32 today. M S Dhoni was born on the 7th of July 1981. The CricBol.com team wishes the Greatest ever Indian Captain a Happy Birthday. We also wish him faster recovery from his current injury. This is a special occasion for all MSD fans around the world and especially his Indian fans. He has taken Indian cricket to great heights and have achieved what no previous captain was able to achieve. He has made India the champions in all formats of the game.

Not being a born cricketer like many of the geniuses in cricketing history, M S Dhoni was a football player in Ranchi, the capital of the Indtian state of Jharkhand. He was the goal keeper of his team and was discovered as a good prospect for wicket keeping in cricket while he was doing his job on the football field. That moment was the deciding factor for the Indian cricket that was to come in the coming years. MSD debuted with the Indian team in 2004 and played against Bangladesh in his first match. He was soon to become the captain of the Indian t20 team and bring glory to the country by winning the first edition of the ICC T20 World Cup in 2007.

He did not look back after that. India became the number one Test side under his captaincy. Dhoni has brought many laurels to Indian cricket, the biggest being the world championship during the 2011 ICC World Cup.  India recently won the ICC Champions trophy 2013 under his captaincy. This made India the Champions of the world cricket in all formats of the game.
