KL Rahul, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja registered  half-centuries while Ajinkya Rahane and Wriddhiman Saha also spent quality time in the middle as the Indian batsmen had a good workout on day two of the second warm-up game against West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) President’s XI at Warner Park in Basseterre, St. Kitts on Friday (July 15).Jadeja, who was the pick of the Indian bowlers on day one with figures of 3 for 16 in 13 overs, continued his impressive display, this time with the bat, as he registered a 52-ball half-century to extend the lead. Coming in at the fall of Ajinkya Rahane’s wicket, with the scorecard reading 254 for 7, Jadeja dealt in a flurry of boundaries in a brisk 44 run-stand with Wriddhiman Saha to take India’s lead past 100. While Saha fell just before tea, Jadeja continued positively, taking India past 300 and stretching the lead past 150 during the course of a 47-run partnership with R Ashwin.

Earlier, a steady partnership between Rahul and Kohli helped India wipe out the deficit in the first session. Starting the day at 95 for 3, Rahul and Kohli began cautiously and were happy to knock the ball around and offer the full face of the bat, while also putting away the loose deliveries to build a solid platform for India. Rahul, who remained on 49 for a few overs, reached his second fifty of the tour, off 111 deliveries. With back-to-back fours off Cornwall in the final over before lunch, Rahul extended his boundaries tally to 10 (9 fours and a six) as he helped India take a lead.Rahul, retired just before the start of the second session. The Indian captain went on to register his first half-century of the tour before being trapped in front of the stumps by Cornwall. Rahane and Binny then added 44 runs for the sixth wicket but Cornwall ended that stand, when Binny was caught down the leg side for 16.

Saha came out with a positive mindset, scoring three fours off Cornwall, while Rahane looked solid during his stay at the crease, as they helped India past 250. However, the stand yielded 23 runs as Rahane (32) was caught by Leon Johnson giving Cornwall his fourth wicket. After that Jadeja and Saha went after the bowling and stretched India’s lead past 100. While Saha was run out for 31, Jadeja remained unbeaten at tea, and went on to pile the misery in the final session.

Brief scores:

WICB President’s XI 180 & 26/1 (Leon Johnson 17; R Ashwin 1/14) trail

India 364 (KL Rahul 64, Ravindra Jadeja 56, Virat Kohli 51; Rahkeem Cornwall 5/118) by 158 runs.

Reason behind Misbah-Ul-Haq 10 push-ups celebration

Misbah-Ul-Haq’s push-ups celebration was the biggest talking point for cricket lovers on Twitter and Facebook. Misbah played a brilliant knock to reach his first ever hundred at Lord’s Cricket Ground, and 10th overall in Test cricket. It was a captain’s innings that united cricket from around the world to praise Misbah’s effort. As partner Asad Shafiq smiled on, Misbah underlined his defiance of age with the speed of the push-ups, and by springing to his feet with a smile at the end of it.

Many were thinking why Misbah celebrated his hundred by doing push-ups. Misbah answered this question in an interview at the end of day 1. This is what he said:

“That was my promise to the army guys,” Misbah said afterwards. “We did a camp in Abbottabad before the skill camp in Lahore, and we used to do an honour code every time, we just stepped into the ground and did ten push-ups. And I promised them, if ever I score a hundred, I will definitely do that to remind you that we were there.”

On a lighter note, Misbah also admitted as an aside that his drill sergeant would probably have asked him to do ten more because his arms had been too bent the first time around, but nobody on the ground had any such complaints. The packed crowd at Lord’s stood up in praise of the oldest Test centurion in 82 years.

MINI IPL HITS ROADBLOCK

For the first time in a long time, Board of Control for Cricket in India saw itself sidelined by other board members of ICC at the recent annual conference of the game’s governing body in Edinburgh early this month. BCCI president Anurag Thakur proposed the idea of an annual overseas Indian Premier League in September. TOI has learnt that four cricket boards -Cricket Australia, West Indies Cricket Board, England Cricket Board and Cricket South Africa – categorically opposed the BCCI’s idea. TOI had reported in May about a tussle between the BCCI and ICC to grab the vacant September slot for a marquee T20 event. While BCCI had been busy looking at ways to push the overseas IPL, the ICC – led by chairman Shashank Manohar – has been in talks with Star TV to again make the World T20 a once in-two-years affair.

This could be the first time in close to two decades that a BCCI proposal in the international circuit has been turned down. “If true, it’s a telling sign of the reduced clout the current set of administrators (in the board) wield, unlike their predecessors. It’s also a personal embarrassment for the men running the BCCI right now,” a source said.Meanwhile, the BCCI was scheduled to call a meeting of (only) franchise owners and CEOs earlier this week.

“At the back of my mind there is a responsibility that, I am representing Muslims & British Asians”: MOEEN ALI

Moeen Ali, England and Wales Cricket Board, Religion, Islam, Muslims, British Asians, Cricket, Sports

Moeen Ali, the all-rounder from England recently has stated that religion is above everything for him. Moeen clearly stated that he is willing to give up cricket for Islam because his religion gives him happiness. The Englishman has played 26 Tests and 39 ODIs which includes two tons in each format. He has 66 wickets to his name in Tests and 39 in ODIs.

According to BBC he stated that “At the back of my mind there is a responsibility that I am representing Islam, Muslims and British Asians. It is a positive thing. As long as I perform, which is the most the most important thing and I can behave.”

The Southpaw further added  “The most important thing of everything, it is something that, I feel like it makes me feel free and the one I wanted to be all my life. As a youngster, I was far from it. When I was about 18-19, I decided that this is the way I want to live my life.  It is the only thing that can give me happiness. Cricket is important but nowhere near as important as Islam, if I have to give up cricket tomorrow, it will be easy”

Ali is an important member of the English squad and is expected to play a vital role in the recent series against Pakistan. When asked about the struggles of being a minority in any country he stated that “It is tough, it does feel like you have be on your guard. For me, it’s a part of life, hopefully, I’ll get through the rough bit and hopefully see a bit of light at the end of it and it will be all right. Muslims have had it tough before, other communities have had it tough before in other countries, it’s part of life.”

ARJUN TENDULKAR SPOTTED WITH IMRAN KHAN AT LORD’S

Imran Khan, Arjun Tendulkar, India, Pakistan, England, Pakistan Tour of England, England vs Pakistan

Arjun Tendulkar, son of Sachin Tendulkar, was the surprise visitors at the Lord’s on DAY 2 of first Test match between England vs Pakistan. He was spotted alongside Pakistan legend Imran Khan. Reportedly, Arjun also bowled at the England batsman in the nets morning before the start of the play.  Arjun Tendulkar, who is a left-handed fast bowler and a middle order batsman was recently picked in West Zone Under-16 side. In another snap, Tendulkar was seen practicing his grip action. It seemed that Imran must have shared a tip or two about fast bowling with the young man.

Pakistan were dismissed for 339 on DAY 2, after starting the day on 282 for 6. Skipper Misbah-ul-Haq, who was unbeaten on 110, added just four more runs to his overnight score. He became the oldest captain in Test history to score a ton, which also happened to be his first on English soil.

Yasir Shah tears through English middle order to put Pakistan on Top

A brilliant display of leg-spin from Yasir Shah has put Pakistan in the driver-seat against England on day two of the first Test at Lord’s. Shah claimed his fifth Test five-wicket haul as England crumbled from 1-118 to 7-232 in pursuit of Pakistan’s first-innings 339.

It was the first time a leg-spinner had taken five wickets in a Test innings at the ‘home of cricket’ since Shah’s fellow Pakistani Mushtaq Ahmed performed the feat 20 years ago.

What made the 30-year-old Shah’s feat all the more impressive was that this was his first Test outside of Asia and the United Arab Emirates.

It was also his first Test since completing a three-month drugs ban after he tested positive for the masking agent chlortalidone.

After he induced the well-set Joe Root to hole out on 48 and so end a second-wicket stand of 110, Shah ran through England’s middle order, with James Vince, Gary Ballance, Jonny Bairstow and Moeen Ali also falling to the spinner.

Shah, who had previously posed England problems by taking a combined 15 wickets against them in two Tests in the UAE at an average of just over 21 apiece, said adjusting to local conditions had helped him on Friday.

With Mushtaq Ahmed, now a member of Pakistan’s coaching staff acting as an interpreter, Shah said: “I’ve played lots of cricket in the UAE where you have to bowl quicker. In England the pitches have got some pace so you have to concentrate on varying your pace.

“My role was very clear, to give support to the fast bowlers, but luckily I got the five wickets and I’m glad for the team.”

As for Shah getting his name on the honours board, Mushtaq Ahmed — who took five for 57 in Pakistan’s 164-run win over England at Lord’s in 1996 — added: “It’s a great honour for Yasir to take five wickets here too, at the home of cricket.

“When you turn up all the bowlers and batsmen go to see other Pakistani names on the honours board. When you see your name on there you feel so proud.

“All the credit must go to Yasir though, the players have to deliver and he did that brilliantly.”

ALASTAIR COOK BECOMES HIGHEST RUN-GETTER AS TEST OPENER

Alastair Cook scored 81 in the first innings against Pakistan at Lord’s on Friday. He, thus, became the highest run-getter as a Test opener with 9630 runs at an average of 46.52 in 123 Tests, going past Sunil Gavaskar’s tally of 9607 runs at an average of 50.29 in 119 Tests. Cook joined Mike Atherton as the only two England skippers to boast of 30 scores of fifty and more. Cook has 10 tons and 20 fifties as England skipper, while Atherton has 8 tons and 22 fifties as the captain.

During his innings of 81, Cook became the highest run-getter against Pakistan in Test. Cook has 1260 runs at an average of 48.46 and surpassed DI Gower’s tally of 1185 against Pakistan in 27 Test innings. Yasir Shah took 5/62 on the second day’s play at Lord’s. Before Yasir Shah, Indian leg-spinner Bhagwath Chandrasekhar took 5/127 against England at Lord’s in 1967.This was his fourth four-wicket haul against England in 5 innings.

Rajkot and Visakhapatnam now follow the trend, hosting the first two Tests before the series moves on to the traditional venues in Mohali, Mumbai and Chennai.

The tour resumes with the first ODI to be played in Pune on January 15th, 2017. Cuttack and Kolkata will complete the ODI leg while Kanpur, Nagpur and Bengaluru are scheduled to host the T20Is.
