Mushtaq, the bowling coach of the Pakistan cricket team, has picked just one Pakistan player (Wasim Akram) in his all-time eleven. “(I pick) Alastair Cook as an opener. I choose him because he is a good Test cricketer, has good patience and has got 10,000 runs in his Test career. And I have got Hashim Amla (to partner Cook). He is a brilliant player.

“At number 3 is Ricky Ponting. He is very brave. (He took) took fast bowlers on. He is also a great leader. Sachin Tendulkar (at number 4). We all know he is the best so far. He has the best record. Malcolm Marshall at No. 9. He was a great bowler and he was also smart. He was fast and got different variations.”

TEAM SELECTION IS NOT IN OUR CONTROL SAYS KL RAHUL

Board of Control for Cricket in India, West Indies Cricket Board, India's Tour of West Indies 2016, West Indies vs India, WICB, BCCI, WIvsIND, Virat Kohli, Jason Holder, Murali Vijay, Kohli, Rahane, Darren Bravo, Samuels, Ramdin, Ishant, Umesh, Ashwin, Jerome Taylor, Fidel Edwards, Kemar Roach, Phil Simmons, Anil Kumble, Sanjay Banger, Abhay Sharma

KL Rahul is having a good time in the West Indian soil. He has so far hit two half-centuries in the first warm-up match in St. Kitts against West Indies Board President’s XI. In the first game, he made 50 and then continued his good form in the second at the same venue to hit a fluent 64. But, this good run of form, still doesn’t assure him of a place in the starting line-up, when the first Test begins at Sir Viv Richards Stadium, Antigua, on Thursday (July 21).

Rahul said in an interview to bcci.tv that, “Look that (team selection) is not in our control. As players, we look to prepare well and whenever an opportunity comes, you need to be prepared to go out there and do well personally and also for your team and play to the roles and responsibilities given. There is still a week to go before the Tests. In the next couple days, we will know who is playing and who is not, we will start preparing accordingly. But yeah, not really worried about it. When it comes, it comes and whatever has to happen will happen.”

KL Rahul further went on to say that, “The purpose of coming here was to get used to the wickets and conditions and I am really happy with the way I’ve batted. It is hot and humid and it is not easy to get runs out there. I tried to use these two innings and the time before the Tests to prepare for the Test series.”

The Indian bowlers did a fantastic job in restricting their opponents to just 180 in the second warm-up game and Rahul feels that they are ready for the forthcoming Tests. “We have three quality spinners and they have been in good form in the Test format and we will be happy if we get turning tracks. We have the firepower in the pace department as well. All of them have been doing well and increased their fitness levels and pace, so it is good to see them bending their back on wickets like these. Getting the ball to carry are good signs,” KL Rahul concluded.

WICB PRESIDENT’S XI EARN STRONG-FOUGHT FOR DRAW

WICB President XI’s middle-order stood tall and frustrated the Indian bowlers on the final day to give their side a fighting draw. With the home side leading by 39 runs, the players shook hands after 78 overs were bowled in the day. Campbell began the day in positive fashion against Ravindra Jadeja, but perished by mistiming a slog against the left-arm spinner. Hope failed to deliver for the second time in the match after his heroics in the first practice game, as Ravichandran Ashwin had him caught at short fine-leg.

Blackwood joined Vishaul Singh, and the duo began to bat out time in confident fashion. The home side were clearly playing for the draw and their tactics forced captain Virat Kohli to bring in Stuart Binny and Murali Vijay. The batsmen though continued to frustrate the bowling side.  Finally India got the much needed wicket as Vishaul was run-out for 39 by Shikhar Dhawan.  The 62-run partnership, that lasted 31 overs, had been broken.

Blackwood batted with more responsibility and eventually went on to reach his half-century. Ravichandran Ashwin gave India another much needed breakthrough by castling the Blackwood for 51 just before Tea.  In the begining of the third and and final session, India were still ahead by 9 runs but Montcin Hodge and Rahkeem Cornwall sensed the situation and played some shots in order to fetch a lead. Cornwall smashed two huge sixes before edging Mohammad Shami to the keeper.  Hamilton and Hodge then stayed at the crease for some time  to ensure that they didn’t lose another wicket as the game was drawn.

Brief scores:

WICB President’s XI 180 (Rahkeem Cornwall 41, Ravindra Jadeja 3/16) and 223/6 (Jermaine Blackwood 51, Ravichandran Ashwin 3/59) drew with

India 364 (KL Rahul 64, Rahkeem Cornwall 5/118).

LORD’S CROWD GOT BEHIND ENGLAND BOWLERS ON DAY 3

Test cricket is very popular in nations such as England and Australia. Cricket lovers enjoy a good contest between bat and ball. The ongoing Lord’s Test between England and Pakistan is an abundant prove of that. The third day’s play saw some extraordinary scene which does not happen quite often in Test cricket.  England supporters, called the Barmy Army, got behind their bowlers and cheered them for every delivery they bowled. They roar and clapped as English bowlers ran up to the crease. The sight can perturb any top-order batsman. It also motivated and pumped the England bowlers to knock off Pakistan.England supporters cheered every delivered Steven Finn bowled. Finn managed  couple of edges but unfortunately it fell short. Stuart Broad was too welcome with same reception. But Pakistan’s pair of Shah and Sarfraz Ahmed frustrated the English bowlers with their tenacious batting.

MISBAH BECAME THE FOURTH PLAYER TO GET A TON AND DUCK IN FIRST TEST AT LORD’S

After becoming the second oldest cricketer to hit a ton at Lord’s, Misbah-ul-Haq has joined another list of cricketers when he scored a duck in the second innings. Misbah swept the second ball in the second innings to Alex Hales at deep mid-wicket off Moeen Ali for a duck. He is the fourth player to score a ton and a hundred in his first Test at Lord’s. The other three players are :

Dilip Vengsarkar: In the Lord’s Test between India and England in 1979, Dilip Vengsarkar fell for duck coming in at No 3. In the second innings, he played a tenacious innings of 103 off 295 balls with 13 fours, which helped India to draw the Test against England.

Sid Barnes: The Australian opener was dismissed for a duck in the second Ashes Test at Lord’s in 1948, but he came back strongly to score a fantastic 141 in the second innings with the help of 14 fours and 2 sixes. Barnes was the highest scorer in the second innings as Australia won the match by 409 runs. He became the first player to score a ton and duck in his first Test at Lord’s.

Charlie Davis: West Indian cricketer Charlie Davis scored 103 off 301 balls with 6 fours at Lord’s in 1969 in the first innings against England.  He scored a duck in the second innings to become the second player in this exclusive list.

BCCI unhappy with some Indian players posing with beer ahead of West Indies Tests

Board of Control for Cricket in India, West Indies Cricket Board, India's Tour of West Indies 2016, West Indies vs India, WICB, BCCI, WIvsIND, Virat Kohli, Jason Holder, Murali Vijay, Kohli, Rahane, Darren Bravo, Samuels, Ramdin, Ishant, Umesh, Ashwin, Jerome Taylor, Fidel Edwards, Kemar Roach, Phil Simmons, Anil Kumble, Sanjay Banger, Abhay Sharma

While the Indian cricketers have largely had a relaxed time in the Caribbean so far, with the squad spending quality time in its pristine beaches, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not taken kindly to pictures of a couple of players posing with beer in their hands, urging them to behave as “role models”.

According to a report on The Hindu, the BCCI shot off an advisory to the Indian team through their manager Riyaz Bagwan after some of the Indian players were found posing with beer bottles during their outing to St Nevis, a popular beach, during their break between the two scheduled warm-up fixtures.

“Some of the BCCI officials aren’t happy with players posting such images on social media. There has been no written communication, but the manager has been asked to send a message to the players to ensure that nothing that could set a bad example should be posted online,” a BCCI official was quoted as saying in the report.

The picture in question featured Karnataka batsman KL Rahul as well as speedster Umesh Yadav and all-rounder Stuart Binny. The original post has been deleted from Twitter following BCCI’s reaction.

“Many kids blindly follow the star cricketers’ actions on and off the field, so our boys have got to always keep that in mind. They should always consider the sense and sensitivities of Indian cricket fans,” said another BCCI official in the report.

India are currently playing a three-day warm-up match against the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) President’s XI in Basseterre, and were in firm control of the proceedings thanks to the all-round heroics of Ravindra Jadeja.

Rahul, one of the players in question, has struck two consecutive half-centuries in practice games in the tour so far, looking set to seal a spot in the main XI for the first Test that starts on 21 July.

Starc the key to series win over Sri Lanka: Allan Donald

Australia Tour of Sri Lanka 2016, Cricket Australia, Sri Lanka Cricket, Test Cricket, Sri Lanka vs Australia, SLvsAUS, SLvAUS, Angelo Mathews, Steve Smith, Chandimal, Kusal Mendis, Kusal Perera, Warner, Voges, Khawaja, Herath, Pradeep, Eranga, Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyonn, Grahan Ford, Darren Lehmann

Former South African Pace great Allan Donald has labelled Mitchell Starc as the key to Australia’s hopes of toppling Sri Lanka when the Test series begins next week.

The tourists have concluded their two-day intra-team warm-up clash in Colombo with all players enjoying a competitive hit-out and some, such as Shaun Marsh, Steve Smith, Nathan Coulter-Nile and spearhead Starc, flourishing in hot and steamy conditions.

However, coach Darren Lehmann and wicketkeeper Peter Neville returned to the team hotel on day two because of illness.

Australia will have an official three-day warm-up clash, also in Colombo, against a Sri Lanka Board XI from Monday to fine-tune preparations, ahead of the series opener in Kandy on July 26.

Starc claimed 3-50 off 17 overs in his first match with a red ball since ankle surgery eight months ago. He had returned strongly in the recent one-day series in the Caribbean, but the opening Colombo match gave him an opportunity to work his way through extended spells.

Donald, Australia’s caretaker bowling coach, said Starc had the pace and bounce to torment Sri Lanka in the three-Test campaign.

“Starc’s the one, without a shadow of doubt,” Donald told the Cricket Australia website.

“He’s a 150 [km/h] bowler, he’s done it in the World Cup and in Twenty20 cricket. I’ve seen him destroy top orders, middle orders, lower orders doing that same thing from both sides [of the wicket].

“That’s where he is at, and that’s why he is the leading fast bowler in the world right now. He leads that from the front, he just needs to be backed up by the rest of the group so there’s a lot of hard work over the next couple of weeks.”

Coulter-Nile would appear unlikely to line up in the first Test but displayed good form in claiming 3-20 off 10 overs. He, too, had been ill soon after the team arrived.

“It’s always good to bowl against your teammates every now and then, just to get the competitive juices flowing. I have been crook for the first few days, it set me back a little bit so it was good to get out there and have a bowl,” he said.

While the spin of Nathan Lyon and Steve O’Keefe will be crucial, the tourists understand the importance of reverse swing on the sub-continent. But Sri Lanka’s humidity threatens to take the edge of this vital weapon.

“It’s just so wet here, you just drip constantly, so trying to keep that ball dry is tough. Like I said, as soon as it goes in the outfield or someone who is sweaty gets their hands on it, it stops,” Coulter-Nile said.

“Hopefully, we can get it going and it will be a big weapon for us. I think it’s the same for all quicks – it’s hard toil.

“You just have to bowl nice straight lines. You don’t get a lot of movement in the air, so it’s really about the patient game and trying to outlast the batsmen.”

O’Keefe was the stand-out spinner, claiming 3-38 off 13 overs, while Lyon struggled, finishing with 0-122 off 26 overs combined over the two days.
