Delhi Daredevils underused me and didn’t back my skills : Pawan Negi

VIVO IPL 2016, Indian Premier League 2016, Delhi Daredevils, Pawan Negi, de Kock, Samson, Nair, Zaheer, Morris, Mishra, Dravid, Paddy Upton

Pawan Negi the slow left-arm orthodox bowler who was roped in by Delhi daredevils with a mind-boggling deal of 8.50 crore, Negi was the most expensive Indian buy in an otherwise low-key IPL season 9 player’s auction. Now that  the Indian Premier League 2016 is finished, the 23-year-old who bowled just nine overs in the eight matches he played and bagged just one wicket apart from scoring mere 57 runs with the bat, justify his million dollar buy.

In an interview to Asian Age, Negi said “I was underused by the franchise and i wasn’t clear about my role in the side which was one of the reasons for my poor show during the tournament.”

Even Negi had no clue on Daredevils continuous chopping and changing in the playing eleven as he said “Sitting on the bench was hard to digest as I never expected to watch the action from the sidelines. I was mentally down, but I didn’t lose hope. After the season, T.A. Sekhar and our manager Sunil Valson pepped me up saying that I didn’t get enough opportunities to showcase my abilities. The hardest part was, before every match, I had no clue whether I would play or not.”

Talking about what probably went wrong with him in the tournament the Delhi born Spinner said “I kept wondering why wasn’t I given more opportunities. And the team management didn’t tell me the reason either. When I was with CSK, Mahi bhai (MS Dhoni) backed my abilities. Maybe, I feel Delhi didn’t back my skills with bat and ball. Maybe, it was a rotation policy, because I was never told that I was dropped.”

Talking about his future plans Negi said “Though I’m a very positive person, I would say this IPL ended on a negative note for me. I wasn’t surprised a bit that I didn’t make the cut for the Zimbabwe series because I didn’t perform well in the IPL. Now, I will practice hard for the upcoming Ranji season.” concluded Negi.

AJINKYA RAHANE’S TOP 5 TEST INNINGS

AJINKYA RAHANE’S TOP 5 TEST INNINGS

Border-Gavaskar Trophy, CricBuzz Cup, Pataudi trophy, ANZ Cup, Freedom trophy, Board of Control for Cricket in India, Cricket Australia, Sri Lanka Cricket, England and Wales Cricket Board, New Zealand Cricket, Cricket South Africa, Kohli, Vijay, Rahane, Ishant, Umesh, Ashwin, Warner, Smith, Rogers, Johnson, Starc, Hazlewood, Sangakkara, Thirimanne, Mathews, Chammera, Herath, Prasad, Williamson, Taylor, McCullum, Boult, Southee, Waner, Amla, Kallis de Villiers, Steyn, Morkel, Philander

The most dependable Indian batsman currently and certainly India’s best batsman in overseas Tests, Ajinkya Rahane brings the same sigh of relief which used to be feel by the presence of Rahul Dravid at the crease. His compact technique along with his ability to adapt in all conditions makes him a successful Test batsman all over the world. The Mumbaikar so far in his short Test career has already shown that he has a perfect temperament for Test Cricket and has amassed 1619 runs in 40 innings with 6 centuries and 7 half-centuries. Rahane has played only 5 Tests in India out of the 22 Tests that he has played so far in his 3-year-old Test career and still managed to have a healthy Test average of 44.97. Out of the 6 hundreds that Rahane has made so far 4 of them have came away from home and out of those 4 (away from home) 3 of them have came outside the sub-continent. Ajinkya Rahane turns 28 today, CricBol brings you Five of the best knocks played by Rahane in his glorious little Test career so far:

(1) 103 vs England at Lord’s : – English Skipper Alastair Cook won the toss and put India to bat first on a green-top, it was so green that everyone were finding it difficult to differentiate between the Lush outfield and the strip. As expected every Indian batsman struggled to get going but as they say “when the going gets tough the tough gets going”, Ajinkya Rahane stood up tall to rescue India and scored a magnificent ton (103 runs) to propel India to 295 in the first inning against an attack comprising of James Anderson and Stuart Broad. Rahane’s herculean effort with the bat gave India the historic victory at Lord’s after 28 long years.

(2) 127 vs South Africa at Kotla :- It was a series so difficult for the batsmen that only 2 tons came in the entire 4 match Test series and guess what both the hundreds were scored by none another than the ever so stylish Ajinkya Rahane. India were reeling at 139 for 6 in the first inning of Delhi Test before Rahane got the support from Jadeja and Ashwin. But at the end of the day, it was his 127 which made the difference, and took India to the very good first inning total of 334, India won the match by a huge margin of 337 runs.

(3) 147 vs Australia at Melbourne :- This was the inning overshadowed by the genius of Virat Kohli’s 169 but Rahan’e effort was no lesser than Kohli. In this inning he took on the short pitch barrage of Mitchell Johnson with so much courage and authority and played some jaw dropping strokes all around the wicket throughout the inning. The match was high scoring and the eventual outcome was draw.

(4) 126 vs Si Lanka at Colombo :- After losing the first Test of the series at Galle in a dramatic fashion, India were needed someone to show character in the 2nd Test and that’s exactly what Rahane did at Colombo in the 2nd Along with Vijay, Rahane added 140 runs for the 2nd wicket partnership, which helped India set Sri Lanka a target of 413 runs in the 4th inning. India won the game by 278 runs.

(5)118 vs New Zealand at Wellington :- First Test ton is always the special one and that was no different for Rahane as he scored his first Test ton outside the sub-continent against an attack comprising of Southee and Boult. Having bowled New Zealand out for 192, India were looking to post a mammoth first inning total and were struggling at 165/5, then Rahane joined Kohli at the crease. Firstly he added 63 runs with Kohli for the 6th wicket partnership and then 120 runs for the 7th wicket partnership with MS Dhoni. Rahane was the second last batsman to get out but not before making his graceful and elegant looking first Test ton which propel India to a mammoth first inning total of 438 runs. Brendon McCullum’s marathon inning of 302 in the second inning ends the match in a draw.

In the 2nd match of Ballr Cup 2016 triangular series, 50 overs World Cup Champions Australia probed to be too good against the 20 overs World Champions West Indies and open their account in the Tri-Series with a bonus point victory. Australia outplayed West Indies in every department of the game. Due to Wet outfield, Match delayed by some time as constant shower throughout the day led to the outfield remaining wet. But once the match started, there were no interruption from rain.

Australian skipper Steve Smith won the toss and invited the hosts to bat first. West Indies were playing with the same side which defeated the Proteas two days back, on the other side Australian pacer Mitchell Starc was making his comeback for Australia in colour clothing after a gap of almost an year due to series of foot injuries. From the very first over , Starc was on the money as he troubled both the West Indian openers especially Andre Fletcher. Andre Fletcher was trapped in front by Starc, Umpire declined the appeal and Smith went upstairs straightaway for the review but the decision didn’t come in Australia’s favour and in the very next ball because of the pressure created by the previous deliveries, Fletcher hit the ball straight to Maxwell’s hand at point. After the early loss, Johnson Charles with Darren Bravo put on a fluent looking 44 runs stand for the second wicket, Darren Bravo was the aggressor who played a few gorgeous looking strokes on both sides of the wicket in his little inning of 19. Once Darren Bravo got out, it triggered for steep slide of West Indian innings as wickets started tumbling after off spinner Lyon was brought into the attack by Smith. Nathan Lyon struck twice in the same over to send Marlon Samuels and Kieron Pollard back to the pavilion. After that Australian spin trio Lyon, Zampa and Maxwell took over the West Indian innings and West Indies got bowled out on 116 runs only.

Australia started their chase in an aggressive mode as Warner and Finch were looking in hurry, they were playing their shots all around the wicket as if the wicket suddenly became an easy one to bat. Warner carried his IPL form in the Tri-Series too and scored an unbeaten half century. He was well supported by Finch which helped Australia to reach 53/1 at Dinner Break. West Indies took some quick wickets to pull things back as Australia slid from 85/1 to 92/4 but it was too little too late for the West Indies as Australia was always in control of the required run-rate. Eventually Australia registered a comfortable win by 6 wickets and again proved to the world that why they are the World Cup champions. Nathan Lyon was adjudged Man Of The Match for his outstanding spell of 10-2-39-3.

Match Summary :-

West Indies 116 (all-out) in 32.3 Overs (Johoson Charles 22 off 40 balls, Carlos Brathwaite 21 off 48 balls; Adam Zampa 3/16, Nathan Lyon 3/39)

Australia 117/4 in 25.4 Overs (David Warner 55 off 55 balls, Usman Khawaja 27 off 38 balls; Sunil Narine 2/36; Benn 1/21) beat West Indies by 6 wickets

Pakistan fast bowler Mohammmad Amir is all set to return to Test Cricket in the upcoming tour of England starting from July 14 next month. Ironically Amir will be making his Test come back at the same venue (Lord’s Cricket Ground) where six year’s ago he bowled deliberate no-balls and was charged for spot-fixing.

Chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq while announcing the squad in Lahore said “Amir is likely to get the visa for the tour of England in the next couple of days.”

Pakistan Cricket Board trying their level best to get the visa in time for Amir and has specifically sent a request to UK high commission and to England and Wales Cricket Board to help in getting Amir the visa on the basis that he was not deported in fixing case and that he had pleaded guilty during the court trial in 2011.

Since making his comeback after suspension last September, Amir has been a regular feature in Pakistan’s one-day and Twenty20 sides and has been quite impressive with his swing and control but has yet to tested in the most prestigious format of Cricket (Tests). Inzi said while interacting to to media-persons “Amir has been in good form and we hope that he will lead the attack well. Sohail Khan is also doing well as he has been preferred in the right-arm, left-arm bowling combination while we are taking two wicket-keepers because this is a long tour.”

Regular opener Ahmed Shehzad was not selected over disciplinary issues, leaving the opening positions to the inexperienced left-handed pair of Shan Masood, who is only seven Tests old, and Sami Aslam who has played only one. Aslam, however, was part of the Pakistan junior team which toured England in 2013, when he hit three centuries.

Experienced Younis Khan who missed the 2010 UK tour will be the batting mainstay. Besides Younis, Azhar Ali and Hafeez are the only two who have previously played Test matches in England.

Pace attack consists of Wahab Riaz, Rahat Ali, Sohail Khan and Imran Khan while leggie Yasir Shah and left-armer Zulfiqar Babar are the two spinners.

Pakistan Test squad for the tour of England: Misbah-ul-Haq (captain), Mohammad Hafeez (subject to fitness), Shan Masood, Sami Aslam, Azhar Ali, Younis Khan, Asad Shafiq, Iftikhar Ahmed, Sarfraz Ahmed, Mohammad Rizwan, Yasir Shah, Zulfiqar Babar, Mohammad Amir, Wahab Riaz, Rahat Ali, Sohail Khan, Imran Khan.

JAMES ANDERSON CAN SURPASS MY RECORD IN TESTS SAYS McGRATH

One of the greatest bowler of all time Glenn McGrath has said that England Seam bowler James Anderson can surpass his record of most wickets by a fast bowler in Test Cricket (563), if he keeps going in the same way. Anderson have played 115 Tests for England and have taken 451 wickets at an average and strike-rate of 28.33 and 56.7 respectively.

Now James Anderson is the leading wicket taker for England and overall is in 5th position in the leading wicket takers tally. James Anderson is in third position in the list of most wicket takers among fast bowlers with McGrath (563 wickets from 124 Matches) and Courtney Walsh (519 from 132 Matches) leading the pack. The top three in the leading wicket takers list are all spinners, Muttiah Muralitharan is leading the pack with 800 Wickets in 137 matches, Shane Warne is at 2nd position with 708 Wickets in 145 matches, Indian leggie  Anil Kumble is placed at 3rd position with 619 Wickets in 132 matches.

When McGrath was asked about Anderson, The great Australian fast bowler said “Its completely up to James Anderson. If he stays, then he can do that quite easily and knock me off. I wish good luck to him. He is a quality bowler and there is no doubt about that. When he is firing and the ball is swinging, he is as tough as any bowler going around.”

James Anderson who will turn 34 in the next month (July), is the most experienced English bowler. McGrath also put some light on the experience and consistency which Anderson brings to the plate. “You become a little bit more experienced and you know how to go about things. You have to stay fit and strong and injury free. Anderson has had a few issues in the past but he is come back well. I was lucky enough to play through until I was 37, so I  am sure he is still got plenty of overs left in him.” McGrath concluded.

Narine, Pollard Stars  in West Indies Victory Over South Africa

With Sunil Narine carrer best figure 6/27, West Indies started their campaign with a positive note in the Ballr Cup Tri-Nation Series 2016 against South Africa at the Providence Stadium Guyana. After returning in West Indies colours, Sunile Narine and Kieron Pollard helped West Indies to win the opening match of the Triangular Series. West Indies outplayed South Africa in all the departments of the game.

After winning the toss, South African skipper AB de Villiers opted to bat first on a slow and low  Guyana strip. The pair Quinton de Kock and Hashim Amla provided South Africa with a solid start up front  as they put on 52 runs for  the first wicketn the partnership could not go further as the hero of the WT20 final Carlos Brathwaite struck in his 2nd over and got rid of the dangerous looking de Kock on 30. In the next over, Amla was also trapped by Narine in front of the wicket. After losing both the openers in the space of just 3 balls, skipper AB de Villiers and Rilee Rossouw try to consolidate and added 78 runs for the  3rd wicket partnership and rebuilt the South African innings. One can imagine the condition of the pitch as AB de Villiers who is one of the most brutal batsman in the world scored 31 runs in 49 balls without hitting a single boundary and got out after checking his shot in the last moment against Jerome Taylor, it was very much a soft dismissal. On the other side, Rilee Rossouw who was looking uncomfortable on this slow deck against all the West Indian bowler,  slowly and steadily managed to score his 5th half century in ODI Cricket. Once Rilee Rossouw was dissmissed by Narine at the score of 61 off 83 balls, it triggered a mini-collapse in the South African innings as they got bowled out on 188 in 46.5 overs. Narine was the man did the bulk of damage with his best figure in One Day International Cricket (9.5-0-27-6)

West Indies started off their chase in an aggressive mode as their opener Johnson Charles hit two boundaries in the very first over of Kyle Abbott. But this was not sufficient for the hosts as they were left reeling at 53/3. After the arrival of Kieron Pollard match tilted towards West Indies favour. Pollard smashed most of the proteas bowlers all around the park as if he was playing on a different track . Pollard was looking in hurry as he hit three sixes in his first five deliveries which he faced. Pollard was well supported by Darren Bravo, who made 30 off 69 balls played his role rather well on a difficult Guyana deck. In the last phase of West Indian innings, South Africa managed to take some wickets in quick succession but this was never going to be enough for them as they had posted only 188 on the board. Eventually West Indies won the first match of the Tri-Nation Series by 4 wickets and the two come back man shine in their victory. Sunil Narine was adjudged Man of the match for his supreme spell of (9.5-0-27-6)

Match Summary :-

South Africa 188 in 46.5 Overs (Rossouw 61 off 83 balls, AB de Villiers 31 off 49 balls; Sunil Narine 6/27, Carlos Brathwaite 2/35)

West Indies 191/6 in 48.1 Overs (Kieron Pollard 67 off 67 balls, Darren Bravo 30 off 69 balls; Aaron Phangiso 3/40, Imran Tahir 2/41)

MCC SHOULD CONSIDER LIMITING DIMENSIONS ON BAT SIZES: ICC COMMITTEE

cricbats

The ICC Cricket Committee, chaired by former Indian leg spinner Anil Kumble, has suggested that Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) should strongly consider limiting the dimensions of bats to restore the balance between bat and ball.

High scoring T20s and ODIs on regular basis and even the mishits from batsmen landing over the ropes with ease have been a cause of concern for the experts who feel that cricket is increasingly becoming a batsman’s game. Following a two-day meeting at Lord’s, the headquarters of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), the ICC Cricket committee chaired by Kumble issued a statement saying it wanted MCC, (the laws and rule makers of Cricket) to clampdown on bat sizes with too much of sweet-spot.

While there are limitations on bat length and width but none currently exist on depth. The committee’s view was that “MCC should strongly consider limiting the dimensions of cricket bats to help achieve a better balance in the game”.

The committee comprises of former international captains and legends like Rahul Dravid, Mahela Jayawardene, Andrew Strauss along with former Indian all-rounder and a well known commentator Ravi Shastri also expressed concerns that a lot of batsmen are not using helmets which conform to British Safety Standard (BSS).

The last ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 in Australia and New Zealand witnessed 38 hundreds, 463 Sixes and two double centuries by an individual batsman (Chris Gayle & Mrtin Guptill). The committee received a research paper from MCC citing a wealth of scientific and statistical evidence showing bats have become more powerful in recent years, due to having larger sweet-spots and to go with the smaller boundaries.

The region consists of the Antilles, divided into the larger Greater Antilles which bound the sea on the north, the Lesser Antilles on the south and east (including the Leeward Antilles), the Bahamas, and the Turks and Caicos Islands or the Lucayan Archipelago, which are in fact in the Atlantic Ocean north of Cuba, not in the Caribbean Sea. Some islands in the region have relatively flat terrain of non-volcanic origin. These islands include Aruba (possessing only minor volcanic features), Barbados, Bonaire, the Cayman Islands, Saint Croix, The Bahamas or Antigua. Others possess rugged towering mountain-ranges like the islands of Cuba, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Dominica, Montserrat, Saba, Saint Kitts, Saint Lucia, Saint Thomas, Saint John, Tortola, Grenada, Saint Vincent, Guadeloupe, Martinique, and Trinidad & Tobago. The climate of the region is tropical but rainfall varies with elevation, size and water currents (cool upwellings keep the ABC islands arid). Warm, moist tradewinds blow consistently from the east creating rainforest/semidesert divisions on mountainous islands. Occasional northwesterlies affect the northern islands in the winter. The region enjoys year-round sunshine, divided into 'dry' and 'wet' seasons, with the last six months of the year being wetter than the first half. The waters of the Caribbean Sea host large, migratory schools of fish, turtles, and coral reef formations. Hurricanes, which at times batter the region, usually strike northwards of Grenada, and to the west of Barbados. The principal hurricane belt arcs to northwest of the island of Barbados in the Eastern Caribbean. The region sits in the line of several major shipping routes with the man-made Panama Canal connecting the western Caribbean Sea with the Pacific Ocean.
